A Lap 62 Win

If you follow my social media accounts, you will see me referencing #SimplyBetter. It is a personal project to encourage those around me to find little things to make life better.

In June I turned 61; I am labeling things "Lap 62" -- my 62nd lap around the sun.

Personally, I believe I can make Lap 62 the best year of my life; three months in it has been pretty darned good.

On Saturday night, fellow-61-year-old racer Dale Blaney did the incredible; he won a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car race at Sharon Speedway in Hartford Ohio.

The World of Outlaws series started in 1978, and with Saturday's win Blaney became the oldest winner in the series’ 48-year history. The previous record holder was his older brother Dave, who won a few years ago at a youthful 58 years.

Dale Blaney is a member of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame; he is a six-time Champion of the All-Star Circuit of Champions and leads that series with 137 wins. The win was his 12th with the World of Outlaws. His last World of Outlaws win was 10 years ago.

Tuesday, Dale was a guest on our Winged Nation program. What struck me most about the conversation was how forward-thinking he was. Dale has been a regular guest on our show, and we traditionally talk about a local win and his uncertain future.

Tuesday it was “we want to go here next year” and “we want to do this.”

It reinvigorated Blaney.

It did not give him a false-read that next year he could run the 90-race World of Outlaws schedule and compete every night. It gave him the more realistic hope that by choosing where and when they went, they could compete.

Is that not a great lesson for those of us enjoying the second half of our lives?

“I’m not a good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was,” are the words to the old country song.

Lap 62 changed for me Saturday night, my goals got bigger and better.

The joy it brought to his family, the joy it brought to the sprint car community; and the joy and satisfaction it brought Dale can similarly be lofty goals for all of us, but goals we all should strive for.
Dale Blaney showed that accomplishment, success, and happiness with our passions is available and achievable for those of us on Lap 62, or on similar laps.

And that is #SimplyBetter
