PostNotes: Larson, Outlaws, Pennsylvania Posse and Illinois

IT'S A KYLE LARSON WORLD

In the next two weeks much of the nation's motorsports attention will be on Kyle Larson. For the second consecutive year he will attempt the Indy500/Cola 600 combination on Sundays May 25.

With his NASCAR Cup Series win at Kansas on Sunday, Larson will enter Indy as the Cup Series point leader.

Sunday was a dominant run; he led a whopping 221 (of 267) Laps on what is one of NASCAR s most competitive tracks. It was his sixth win on a 1.5-mile track with this generation of car, which is double the next two drivers: Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick.

Larson has made 33 starts for Hendrick Motorsports on these 1.5-mile tracks: winning 10 of them, a 30 percent winning record.

The next point race in NASCAR is that Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a 1,5-mile oval where he won the 2021 Coca-Cola 600.

POSSE STRONG

You can make a strong case that the greatest rivalry in American Motorsports is the World of Outlaws sprint cars versus the Pennsylvania Posse -- the tough field of drivers who race 410 sprint cars in Central Pa. The drivers respect the history, the opposition, and the insanely passionate fan base in the Keystone State. It is a fan base that buys a lot of t-shirts by the way.

The rivalry works because it ebbs and flows between the two sides over the years. Recently it looked like the Outlaws had the upper hand, until this past week.

While Buddy Kofoid carried the Outlaws to a Wednesday win in the Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway; the Posse, led by Chase Dietz, gave Kofoid about all he could stand. In the end it was Kofoid with Dietz and Anthony Macri, representing the Posse.

Saturday at the race for Morgan Cup at Williams Grove and Macri kept the locals happy with the win. David Gravel, the reigning World of Outlaws Champion and current point leader, finished second.

In wins it was a split. In top-fives it was also a split with the Outlaws going three-two at Lincoln and Posse getting the same three-two score at Williams Grove.

Bring on July -- the next time Outlaws invade Pennsylvania!

LAND OF LINCOLN

Last week I watched a lot of dirt super late model racing in the state of Illinois. My conclusion is that I need to see some of this in person, sooner rather than later. The Illinois bullrings did not disappoint.

Tuesday through Thursday it was a FloRacing Night in America series with stops at LaSalle (a Racetrack Revival), Spoon River and Lincoln. That was followed by a pair of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events at Farmer City on Friday and Fairbury American Legion Speedway on Sunday.

With the World of Outlaws late model schedule quiet, the five nights featured all the biggest names going head-to-head. In the end only Jonathan Davenport could double up on wins, with Bobby Pierce, Devon Moran and Ricky Thornton Jr. grabbing the other wins.

While those drivers scored big paydays; the winners to me were the fans in that part of the country that call those tracks home. Wow, those are great tracks.

SHORTS

Sunday night racing a Huset's Speedway kicked off with their traditional Mother's Day opener, and now all is right in the world.

Brendon "Butterbean" Queen is the real deal. He has always had a great personality, but he is learning "race craft" and putting it to effective use in the ARCA Menards Series.

Mark Dobmeier continues to race up wins at River Cities getting his 152nd on Friday. And Brian Brown continues to rack up wins at Knoxville, scoring his 67th 410 wins on Saturday.
