2022 Race No. 119: September 4, 2022 Cookout Southern 500 – NASCAR Cup Series – Darlington Raceway

DARLINGTON, S.C. – Erik Jones won Sunday’s Cook Out Southern 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway. It was his third career series victory, and second in the prestigious race.

In typical Darlington fashion the race had many twists and turns, but as the second half unfolded Kyle Busch established himself as the car to beat. On lap 324, of 347, while the field circulated under caution the run for Busch came to an end when smoke started billowing from his car, his race was over with the engine failure.

That put Jones in front for the final restart with 20 laps remaining. He was flawless over the final run, staying far enough ahead of Denny Hamlin to never be seriously challenged. Jones won, with Hamlin second and Tyler Reddick completed the top three.

While it was the first win for the merged during the off-season Petty GMS team. It was the 200th victory for the car number 43, owned by Richard Petty. The win was 55 years to the day of Petty’s last win at Darlington, in the 1967 Southern 500.
